As this semester is coming to a close that means it is time to get things ready for the summer. As I mentioned, I will be studying abroad in Italy for the month of May. But once I get back to the states, I am hoping to have an internship lined up.
While this semester has been tough enough as is being both a student and student reporter, trying to find and apply for an internship has been quite the process.
I have been trying to keep my options open but I have found it difficult to find something that will fit with my schedule and my personal desire. I have applied to stations both in Gainesville as well as my hometown of Tampa, Florida.
At least a handful of resumes have been sent out, cover letters have been drafted, applications have been filled out and yet I still find myself in a place of uncertainty. Through this process, I, unfortunately, have had many more negative moments than positive. The biggest negative so far is that no one has gotten back to me yet. I am less than three weeks away from leaving for my study abroad trip and will be out of the states for a month but have no word as to whether or not I will have an internship once I return.
Despite it being a difficult process, I have received several pieces of advice that I would like to share that have helped me and can possibly help you through a difficult time in your life.
First, stay positive. No matter how tough the situation may be, staying positive will help you stay calm and collected throughout the process.
Next, keep your head up. It is easy to get discouraged, especially when everything that has happened has been negative.
You must also never give up. The more you push through and try to get past the situation the more you will grow as an individual both physically and mentally.
Finally, just be yourself. When you go through the application stages of getting a job or internship, it's best to be yourself. It is easy to get caught up in trying to impress employers or even lie to get your way to an ideal position but eventually, the truth will catch up to you. So, it's always best to remain truthful to yourself and to be honest to those you come in contact with.
Hopefully, soon I will hear back from someone and will hopefully have an internship ready for when I get back. But in the meantime, I will stick to those four key points and will continue to push through the process.
