First Time For Everything

For the past couple of semesters, I have worked for WUFT News but as a radio and TV reporter. However, on Friday I got the opportunity to sit at the desk to anchor the 5 o'clock newscast.

This is something that I have looked forward to since the day I started at UF. In high school, I was so used to being able to anchor and produce the school's morning show that once I got to UF I was kind of disappointed that I couldn't do it for WUFT News.

But thankfully, my news directors decided to give me a chance on Friday to work my way up to the anchor's desk.

I posted a series of videos and pictures on my Snapchat story to show my friends and family the process I went through to get ready to anchor for the first time. Below is my Snapchat story from Friday.

Timeline for Friday:

  • Arrive at the College of Journalism and Communications (Weimer Hall) at 2:30 p.m. for the newscast production meeting
  • Put makeup and dress on to get ready for the show
  • Go over my script for the whole newscast
  • Head down to the studio at 4:40 p.m. to do a mic check and quick rehearsal
  • Go live from 5 - 5:30 p.m.
  • After show critique 5:35 - 6 p.m.

Even though I was extremely nervous to go live as anchor for the first time, I absolutely loved the experience. The newscast went by so fast! And, to top it all off I only messed up twice šŸ˜Ž

Although there isn't a way to watch my newscast from Friday, you can watch our most recent newscast at this link.

Let Me Introduce Myself...

I'm going to take a second and break from our tradition programming (aka blog posts) to take a step back and properly introduce myself...  For those that are just now tagging along to read my blog posts, I would like to say hi! I know I did a brief introduction a few months ago but I would like to give a more in-depth bio about myself that I never got the chance to do.  (Don't worry, I'm wearing shorts :) ) My name is Alexis Pastore. I am a 21-year-old fourth-year telecommunication major with a specialization in news and a concentration in sports management at the University of Florida. I was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, and grew up with a passion for sports, sharing stories and helping those around me.  I first found my love for broadcast journalism and news when I joined my high school's TV production program. There, I learned how to film, edit and write for newscasts, feature stories, public service announcements and music videos.  Then...

How to Balance Getting Work Done But Also Doing Absolutely Nothing

I know I have talked about this before a while back on my blog , however, recently I have felt the urge to do LITERALLY NOTHING. I donā€™t know if itā€™s because Iā€™m starting the whole ā€œsenioritisā€ phase in school (*cough cough 197 days left until I graduate*) or if itā€™s because I have been running around campus all week trying to finish my investigative project, do interviews, teach my class and doing homework. Letā€™s be real, itā€™s probably just a combination of all of the above. However, what do you do when you have so much left to complete but have NO desire to do anything? Right now Iā€™m stuck in this dilemma. I have meetings tomorrow on campus, I have a LARGE paper due tomorrow for an online class but all I want to do is just hang out on the couch, watch TV and be lazy. I have found a great article from Psychology Today about how to overcome your lack of desire and tips on how to change your frame of mind in these situations. In the article, Heidi Grant Halvorson explains how oft...

The Tipping Point Review

A couple months ago I read a great book called Don't Make Me Think by Steve Krug and have recently found another great read. This time the book was called The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference and is by Malcolm Gladwell. Here's a quick summary of the book: Gladwell touched on how different ideas, concepts or social trends can spread extremely fast, gain popularity overnight and make incredible impacts on the world. He also touches on how smaller ideas or concepts can snowball into something bigger, causing new major impacts on how a person functions throughout their day-to-day life personally, socially, mentally, physically and professionally. To start off, I would just like to talk about two words that can be found throughout and on the book quite frequently... "tipping point." After reading Gladwell's book and taking away the many concepts he discussed, one thing that always stuck out to me in reference to a tipping point would be how...
